6-25-26 Bo Poo day
Today we woke up early to get out on the field to do our activity for the day, count some Pumice Moonwort and collect data to show where they're popping up at. We all packed into our cars and actually got to leave the tiniest bit early, when we got up we all got lunches and everything ready because we were going out to a very long day with no bathrooms, no Wi-Fi and barely any service, and nothing really in sight. As soon as we got there we got to talk to Marlo Fisher and she told us about how she is a District Botanist and that she doesn't get to do this to often but we would be surveying for Pumice Moonwort and how many would be out there because they have points on the maps that they have checked but there are a few areas that they didn't survey and we could put new points on their map where we would find these plants at.
At first we started by spacing out by the road and walking West first and we had to stay a certain distance away from each other, then if we found any of the plants we were looking for we had to yell out the number of how many we found, the first site we had about 150 something. We went the opposite way and found more about 50 something. Then we drove to check out the pond down the road and she told us that they're trying to figure something out as to why and how they're growing where they are and how they're growing. We all had to come up with some theory as to where they grow and why. I came up with maybe they grow around smaller pumice rocks since those were all over by the plants, and that maybe they grew next to a plant called Buckwheat but that if there were a lot of it that maybe it wouldn't grow near it. We moved to a second site after the pond and we continued to try to look for more, Marlo walked next to me that time so I told her what my little theories were and we looked for some and ended up finding about 25 in one space not next to each other but in a general area. At the end we had over 500 counted and a few new points added to their maps. We ended up also getting a sample from that area and Marlo had to leave us while we got the sample so we left right after our sampling and getting information. We went to this library in Bend, OR and it is so nice compared to any library I've been to before. Anyways, we had a very good day and even though we got dirty we got to go back to camp and shower. Enjoy your day and stay hydrated.
